Managing & Coping with Stress Flashcards

Describe the process of biofeedback in managing stress.

Biofeedback attempts to give a client the skills to manage and control the physiological symptoms of stress. The client is connected to a machine which measures activity such as muscular tension, brain activity, and sweating. When activity is increased, a tone or a display changes, allowing the client to hear or see their physiological response. The client is then taught to use techniques such as relaxation techniques to reduce the physiological arousal. The aim is to reduce the physiological response, for example by lowering the pitch of a tone.
